BRIEFING ON ESD

All items are made up of small atoms and an atom is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. The protons are charged positive, electrons are charged negative and the neutrons have no charge. Under normal conditions, there are the same amount of protons and electrons, giving atom no charge!!

However, an electron can move. When two materials are in contact or separated, the electrons may move from one material to the other, which leaves an excess of positive charge on one material and an equal negative charge on the other and they retain this charge imbalance!!

If the contact material is an insulator, this charge can be held and not moved. This is called Static Electricity. Thus it refers to the buildup of electric charge on the surface of objects. Therefore cause of static electricity requires a separation of positive and negative charges. The static charges remain on an object until they either bleed off to ground or are quickly neutralized by a discharge.

Static electricity can cause materials to attract or repel each other. It can also cause a spark to jump from one material to another.

Electrostatic Discharge or ESD is a single-event that is rapid transfer of electrostatic charge between two objects, usually resulting when two objects of different potentials come into direct contact with each other. ESD can also occur when a high electrostatic field develops between two objects in a close proximity.

ESD is one of the major causes of device failures in semiconductor industry. Major cause of ESD damage in the real world is the HUMAN. A study in the semiconductor reliability news estimated that approximately 70% of device failure is due to ESD/EOS. ESD costs electronic industry millions of dollars each year in damaged component, non-functional circuit board or missing information. ESD can occur in the manufacturing, electronics, semiconductor, shipping, receiving and field handling industries with no visible sign of damage to naked eyes. Hence follow strong and strict ESD procedures in your work place!!

HOW TO CONTROL ESD??

ESD control come in vast variety of forms. However they may be classified into three major categories.

  • Prevention of static charge buildup(ESD grounding and ESD flooring)
  • Safe dissipation of any charge buildup( ESD workstation , ESD storage system and seating system)
  • Improvements in the ESD robustness of the product (ESD consumables)
